Ukraine, Belarus sign memorandum on cooperation in energy sector

KIEV, January 20 (Itar-Tass) - A ceremony of signing a number of Ukrainian-Belarussian documents was held Tuesday in the northern Ukrainian city of Chernigov in the presence of Presidents Viktor Yushchenko of Ukraine and Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus, the Ukrainian President's press service said.

One of the documents is an agreement on easing the travel procedures for workers, specialists, and transporters of cargoes working in the 30 kilometers exclusion zone around the Chernobyl nuclear plant, as well as for foreign specialists taking part in international projects related to the closure of the plant.

The memorandum applies to an automobile road linking the town of Slavutich and the site of the power plant. Participants in these transit trips will be relieved of customs formalities.

The sides also signed a memorandum on cooperation between the Ukrainian cabinet of ministers and the Belarussian government in the energy sector.

The signing of this document will create favorable conditions for loading the operational energy resource transportation networks and building new ones, inclusive of the project of a pipeline for transporting Caspian oil to international markets.

As part of Lukashenko's visit to Ukraine, the two countries' governments and national banks signed a memorandum on trade and economic cooperation in the situation of the global financial crisis.
