Vesti: Belarus suggests new gas pipeline in Europe

Moscow. Belarus has suggested a project to construct a second branch of the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline, the Russian Vesti television announced.

Diplomatic officials of Belarus said that economically such a project right now, which would be an alternative to the Ukrainian pipeline, would be effective.

"The situation at the moment shows that additional reliable facilities for transiting Russian gas to Europe are necessary as quickly as possible," said one of the Belarusian diplomats.

The diplomat notes the projects Russia considers - Nord Stream and South Stream - would be implemented not earlier than 2012, while Yamal-Europe 2 could be set into operation even in a year and a half or two with a considerably lower expenses.

The diplomat said that "Belarus is willing to take on the duty to agree the gas pipeline construction with Poland and Germany in interest of Russian gas transit."
