Belarus president holds up as example Western economic model

MINSK, January 26 (Itar-Tass) - Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko unexpectedly has held up the Western economic development model as an example.

Speaking on prospects for the national economy on Friday, he said that Belarus is not in crisis and there is no need to "tighten the belt".

"You should just handle in a businesslike way the problems that exist with us. Again, nothing should be invented: all this has been long since done by our neighbours - the Finns and the Swedes and the Germans and the French. Even the Poles have succeeded in this respect," Lukashenko said at a ceremony of handing in doctoral and professorial diplomas to scientists and pedagogues.

"There will not be any belt-tightening. I want to say unequivocally - there is no need for that," Lukashenko said.
