Belarus Picks Koldun for Helsinki

A Belarusian government jury has chosen Dmitry Koldun to represent their state broadcaster at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest.

Belarus has become synonymous with dreadful entries since it first joined the Eurovision fold in 2004. Few can forget the tuneless warbling of Angelica Agurbash who paid her way to a very public humiliation in 2005.

Each year, the state broadcaster finds out who it will be told to back to the hilt when a group of government ministers come together to compare the local talent on offer. Money is said to hold considerable sway over who gets the job.

Despite this, 2007 sees the nation break with tradition and send along a performer who, on the surface, looks able to hold a tune.

Dmitry will sing 'Work Your Magic' when Belarus takes its usual place in the qualifying heat of the contest. The song is written by Philipp Kirkorov and Karen Kavaleryan.
