Solana welcomes oil transit agreement between Russia and Belarus

Brussels, Jan 13, IRNA

EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana has welcomed the agreement reached last night between the governments of Russia and Belarus on oil transit through Belarus.

"This is good news for both countries and for the European Union.

I have been in touch with both sides during the negotiations and encouraged them to find an early solution that would avoid a negative impact on oil supplies to the European Union," said Solana in a statement Saturday.

The deal came after Russia accepted to reduce its duty on oil to Belarus to 53 US dollars a ton from 180 US dollars.

The Russia-Belarus energy row had led to disruption of Russian oil supplies through Belarus to several EU countries and Brussels condemned the situation as "unacceptable."

Nevertheless, said Solana, "the interruption of oil supplies, which affected several EU member states, points to the need for a better understanding between the European Union and Russia on the basic principles of a future energy partnership."
