Gazprom, Belarus sign contract

The Russian state gas company and Belarus have ended a long dispute by signing a contract to deliver gas at $100 per 1,000 cubic meters.

The contract was signed just before midnight Dec. 31, Novosti reported. It was in line with Gazprom's policy to bring gas prices for former Soviet states in line with those paid by Western European countries.

Gazprom said that by 2011 Belarus would be paying European prices, with a discount for the shorter distance the gas has to travel.

Under the contract, Gazprom agreed to buy half the shares in Beltransgaz, the Belarus gas pipeline company, within four years. The shares are valued at $2.5 billion.
