EU Investigates Cuts In Russian Oil Supplies Through Belarus

The European Commission on Monday said it was scrutinizing a recent cut-off of Russian oil supplies to Germany and Poland through Belarus but said that supplies in the European Union were not at risk.

EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs has called on authorities in Belarus and Russia for immediate explanation of the switch-off, his spokesman told reporters.

Oil supplies from the Russian Druzhba (Friendship) pipeline to Western Europe were cut off overnight to Monday by the Belarusian government, Polish authorities said earlier Monday.

Warsaw claimed that the problem was connected to the current dispute over oil supplies between Belarus and Russia.

The pipeline carries Russian supplies via Belarus to Poland and the Western Europe pipeline that supplies Poland and Western Germany.

The EU spokesman said neither Poland nor Germany faced "an immediate risk of interruption of oil supply in the short-term."

Current oil reserves in Poland would last for 70 days and in Germany for more than 100 days, he added.

However, he said that the commission was considering calling a meeting of the EU's oil supply group to decide whether it will be necessary to draw on the bloc's strategic oil reserves.
