Belarus hopes Transneft will pay customs duty on Russian oil transit

MINSK. Jan 5 (Interfax) - The Belarussian authorities hope that Transneft, Russia's state owned oil pipeline monopoly, will pay the customs duty imposed by the Belarussian authorities on Russian crude oil exports that transit Belarus.

"Our position is that we are working with honest and fair people and organizations. There are no grounds today to suggest that the duty will not be paid," Belarussian Deputy Justice Minister Igor Tushinsky said at a news conference in Minsk on Friday.

Transneft was informed by its business partner - Belneftekhim company - of plans to introduce a customs duty on oil transit, he said.

"There are no grounds to say that some measures need to be taken today to force [the other party] to pay this duty," Tushinsky said.

The Belarussian State Customs Committee, the Finance Ministry and Belneftekhim have already drafted a legal document to regulate the payment of the oil transit duty, he added.

"A certain mechanism has already been developed. It explains how duty payment declarations should be submitted and sets a timeframe for such operations," he said.
