Belarus mobile operator MDC plans to up investment 30% this year

MOSCOW, Jan 16 (Prime-Tass) -- Belarus' GSM operator Mobile Digital Communications (MDC) which provides its services under the Velcom brand plans to increase its investments 30% on the year to over U.S. $100 million this year, the company said Monday.

Most of the company's investments are spent on the installation of new technologies and buying new equipment.

The company's user base increased 65.2% on the year to 1.9 million users as of now, the company said.

Its network coverage increased 15% in 2005, MDC said without providing comparisons.

MDC installed 430 base stations in 2005, compared with about 172 base stations installed in 2004, the company said.

Presently, there are three mobile operators in Belarus besides MDC. These include Belarus' largest GSM operator, Belarusian-Russian joint venture Mobile TeleSystems, or MTS Bealrus, state-controlled Belarus Telecommunications Network, or BeST, and the country's first ever mobile operator Belarusian-British joint venture BelCel, which operates NMT450i and IMT-MC-450 networks.
